Questions people ask
What is home health care?
Medical care at home from nurses and therapists, ordered by a doctor. Visits are part time, set by your care plan.
How soon can care start?
Usually within 24 hours after your doctor or the hospital sends the order. We call before the first visit.
Does Medicare pay for it?
If you qualify, you pay $0 for covered home health services with Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage and private plans vary, and we check yours before care starts.
How is home health different from home care?
Home care is hourly help with meals, chores, and company, usually paid privately. Home health is skilled medical care that Medicare can cover. Aide visits are covered as part of skilled care, not on their own.
What does "homebound" mean? Can Mom still go to church?
Homebound means leaving home takes a big effort, like needing a walker, a wheelchair, or another person's help. Doctor visits, religious services, adult day care, and an occasional short trip, like to the barber, are still fine.
Do we need a hospital stay first?
No, a hospital stay isn't required. If you qualify, care can start after a doctor visit, a fall, or a change in health.
Can we call you before we have a doctor's order?
Yes. Call us first, and we'll work with your doctor on the order. Your doctor decides if home health is right for you.
What if I don't have a doctor, or can't get to an appointment?
No regular doctor, or can't get to an appointment? Medicare requires a face-to-face visit with a doctor or nurse practitioner, within 90 days before or 30 days after home health starts. Some doctors make house calls. Ask us, and we'll help you find one. That doctor is independent of Comfort Care, and the choice is always yours.
The hospital gave us a list without your name. Can we still choose you?
Yes. You can choose any Medicare-certified agency that serves your area. Tell your doctor or discharge planner you'd like Comfort Care Home Health Services. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, we'll check whether it limits your choice.
How long does home health last?
There's no set limit. Care goes on as long as you still qualify, and your doctor reviews your plan at least every 60 days.
Do you offer 24-hour care?
No. Home health is part-time care, with visits set by your care plan, and Medicare doesn't cover 24-hour care at home. If social work is part of your care plan, your social worker can help you find more support.
Can we get home health in assisted living?
Often, yes. Home can be a house, an apartment, a relative's home, or assisted living. It can't be a hospital or a nursing facility.
Which languages do you speak?
English, Spanish, Armenian, Russian, and Tagalog. Speak another language? Call us and ask whether we have staff who speak it. If not, we arrange a free interpreter.
Is home health the same as hospice or "comfort care"?
No. Despite our name, we are not a hospice. Home health is skilled nursing and therapy to help you recover or stay stable at home. Hospice is comfort-focused care for people with a terminal illness who have chosen to stop treatment aimed at a cure. If your family is weighing hospice, your doctor can explain both, and we will tell you honestly which one fits.
